Croucher Summer Course 2017 - Research Methodology for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response

Course Objectives

Since 2013, CCOUC, with the generous support from the Croucher Foundation, has been organizing biennial research methodology training in the field of disaster and humanitarian crisis.

This upcoming five-day residential summer course is the third cohort of the training. It aims at equipping and inspiring postgraduate students, early careers researchers and experienced practitioners or policy makers especially in Asia Pacific region with practical knowledge on research methodology for disaster and medical humanitarian response. The main areas of concerns of this course include:

• Principles of research design;
• Quantitative and qualitative research methods;
• Latest research methodology development (e.g. Big data initiative in supporting research);
• Key hot topics in disaster and humanitarian settings (e.g. Sendai Framework, Sustainable Development Goals);
• From research to practice: implementation and application of field research setting

Faculty consists of expert members from: 

• Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response (CCOUC);
• WHO Thematic Platform for Health, Emergency and Disaster Risk Management Research Group;
• Key hot topics like Sendai Framework, Sustainable Development Goals;
• UNISDR Asia Science, Technology and Academia Advisory Group (ASTAAG);
• Harvard TH Chen School of Public Health 

Training Format
The Course will be running in the form of lectures, workshops together with tutorials. It will be supported by various online teaching resources. Pre-course readings will be assigned to students before the commencement of the Course.

Applicants' Profile
The Course targets the following cohorts demonstrating keen research interest in disaster and humanitarian context:

• Post-graduates (health & non-health sectors), with preference given to doctoral degree holders;
• Early career researchers;
• Experienced practitioners and policy-makers with research responsibility.

Language
Course will be conducted in English. English proficiency is required.
