The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State), in association with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Committee on Sustainable Energy, and in partnership with Danfoss Corporation, is seeking university and industry partners in an immersive student experience in sustainable energy systems.
Purpose: to engage the next generation of leaders in the built environment evolution of the UNECE Principles for Sustainable Buildings and Low Carbon Communities. Established in 2017, these fundamental principles are intended to guide the sustainable development of buildings, campuses, and cities across the globe. Through this program, students from around the world will be offered the chance to apply these principles through research and to make recommendations on how they should evolve.
Immersive Experience: Participants will join a cohort of students from around the world and learn and work on a variety of energy and sustainability activities including:
- Place-based research to explore unique challenges facing communities around the world
- Hands-on experience with high-potential technologies and practices in sustainable buildings, campuses, and communities
- Critical review of existing policies, standards, and communities of practice
- Cutting edge methods for regenerative development of campus, communities, and cities
Research component: Students will conduct collaborative and interdisciplinary research in building and energy systems design with an emphasis on the testing and evaluation of the UN Principles and implementation efforts relevant in their home country.
Course component: Participants will earn 3 academic credits through participation in a Sustainable Building Project Leadership course focused on the evolution of the building industry through Living Systems thinking.
Who should apply? Students in advanced years of undergraduate studies or graduate programs related to buildings and energy are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have strong academic backgrounds and be mature, independent and proficient in English. Applicants must be age 21 or older.

Estimated Financial commitment: $8,500 (US)
Enrollment cost estimates are based on six weeks of resident instruction, room and board, three credits of graduate tuition, and program fees.
Sponsorship and Financial Assistance is available to highly qualified applicants.
